The largest country in Europe, Germany is a federation with
16 unique districts that reflect the people of the country. The
country is well known for engineering, technology, and being
logical. Still, they are also well known for Gemuetlichkeit -
that is, being friendly to guests. If you are looking for Old
World charm in Europe, Germany has quite a bit to offer. Germany
is an economic powerhouse in Europe today. The 20th century was
rough for Germany, but the 21st century looks bright for Germans
and visitors to the country.
Places to Go in Germany
Berlin - The capital of
Germany is now reunified and is a focal point of modern
Germany. If you want to see old and new Germany combines, you
must go to Berlin. If you're into shopping, Berlin is known
for having great stores and eateries.
Munich - In southern
Germany, this city is probably most well known as the place
where Oktoberfest has its roots. The city is also a gateway to
the Alps.
Dusseldorf - If fashion is
your thing, the city of Dusseldorf will leave you breathless
with the amount of high fashion that goes on here. If you're
lucky, you may be able to pick up something to take home with
you.
Frankfurt - If you are
going to be traveling to and fro in Germany, you're probably
going to go through this transportation hub at least once. Try
to stop for at least a few hours to see city in Germany that
is known for high finance.
Nuremberg - If history
tickles your fancy, a trip to Nuremberg is probably in order.
It may not be the brightest journey, but you're going to learn
a lot about what it was like after World War II.
Black Forest - If hiking and
nature gets you going, you'll want to travel to the Black
Forest and marvel at the beauty as you walk around. There's
lots to see here.
Things to Do in Germany
Hiking - If you didn't
know, Germany is really serious about protecting its forests.
From the famous Black Forest to the other forests in the
country, Germany has some of the most impressive forests in
all of Europe. Recently large areas have been declared
national treasures and are being allowed to revert to their
natural states. Over the next hundred years, this should make
the thriving forests all over Germany even more impressive.
There are also some great mountain ranges that offer
spectacular views. If you're into nature, Germany is a must
stop place in Europe.
Sports - Germans are also
fanatics about sports, especially Football (what the Americans
call Soccer.) Almost 10% of the German population is a fan of
the team officially. If you've ever wanted to see true sports
fans in actions, you're going to have to go to a game (or
three) when you're in Germany. Be prepared to see fans who are
really passionate about the sport, however.
Culture - Germany is also
known for its rich cultural history. The arts and culture
continue to be important to a lot of Germans today. From plays
to festivals to hand-crafted arts all over, Germany has things
to do for those who like art and culture. Musicals are very
popular all over the country, so if you can you'll want to
take in at least one show. Ask the locals what is really hot
at the moment and there's a good chance you won't be
disappointed.
Traveling to Germany can be quite an adventure if you
carefully plan your trip to include going to places that are
known for the activities you like. Whether it's isolation (the
Northern Coasts of Germany or the Black Forest) or a thriving
night life (Hamburg), there's somewhere in Germany that is going
to be to your liking. You may just find that after you've
visited the country once, you're going to want to go back to see
what else there is to enjoy. From beer to brats to ballerinas to
bridges, Germany is a great place to visit.
